Watercolour sketching for travellers - Lesson 1

In this session we learned about the three basic types of watercolour paper:

  • Rough
  • Cold pressed (Not)
  • Hot Pressed

There are two basic types of brush
  • Round
  • Flat

You have been supplied with three brushes and a pad of 300gsm cold pressed paper plus pencils, a pen and an eraser.


We looked at some basic colour theory to begin to understand that choosing the right colours will help you mix the colours you intend. We will talk about colour in every session so you become more confident with them. 

Private study task 1.
Get to know your colours better by mixing each colour with every other see what coours you get. Start by mixing every colour with Lemon yellow


Private study task 2. 

Make a watercolour sketch of a household object or collection of household objects observin

  • all the colours within each object
  • the shadows cast by each object
  • maybe try another fruit or vegetable
